This is a hypothetical sphere composed of icy bodies that surround the solar system. This predicted region is believed to be around 2,000 to 100,000 astronomical units (AU) from the Sun. Some of its most notable moons are Oberon, Titania, Miranda, Ariel, and Umbriel. Enceladus has an icy shell that reflects about 100% of the light that reaches it. It does not absorb much sunlight which makes it a very cold world with temperatures around -201 °C (-330 °F). This page is a continuously updated list of the most incredible, awe-inspiring and unbelievable facts about space.
South Side Trail
Whether it’s for kids looking to learn more about space, or you’re looking for incredible facts for an article, or even if you just love space facts for no real reason, this is for you. The sheer vastness of it, along with the trillions upon trillions of objects in the many billion galaxies of the universe is almost incomprehensible to the human brain. Let us know via and we may print our favourites in the letters page of the magazine.
- The reason for this is the lack of gravity which expands the disks of their spines, making them taller.
- It takes 1 billion seconds for the light from a star 31.7 light-years away to reach Earth.
- Some of its most notable moons are Oberon, Titania, Miranda, Ariel, and Umbriel.
- It stands not only as a natural wonder but also as a symbol of America’s commitment to preserving its most important landscapes and cultural sites.
- So the sunsets on Mars appear as blue due to the way the blue light from the Sun is captured within the atmosphere of Mars.
The gas giant Jupiter is a failed star.
Local state senator Ogden Driskill opposed the change.1415 The name was not changed.
- It means that the same side of Charon faces Pluto and vice versa.
- Devils Tower, or “Mato Tipila” in the Lakota language, embodies a blend of natural grandeur and cultural heritage.
- Most lower-mass stars like red dwarfs, however, live alone without a companion.
- There are 10 times more stars in the night sky than grains of sand on the Earth, with 70 sextillion stars being visible from Earth through a telescope.
- However, Venus has a lot of gasses in its atmosphere which creates a “Greenhouse Effect” that causes a constant temperature of 864° Fahrenheit (462° Celsius) everywhere on the plant’s surface.
Mercury & Venus are the only 2 planets in our solar system that have no moons.
The bear came to rest east of the Black Hills at what is now Bear Butte. Wanblee, activtrades review the eagle, helped the boys off the rock and back to their village. A painting depicting this legend by artist Herbert A. Collins hangs over the fireplace in the visitor center at Devils Tower. That’s equivalent to 60,190 Earth days to orbit the sun once! Neptune has a very slow orbital speed of 3.37 miles per second (5.43 km/s).
This unique structure has intrigued geologists and visitors alike with its origins and unmistakable profile. This hike offers a different perspective of Devils Tower and, with lower crowds, is more enjoyable that the Tower Trail. It’s possible to hike both of these trails even if you only have a half of a day.
Once you are finished here, you can drive to the parking lot for the Joyner Trail or begin your drive out of the park. Devils Tower National Monument Road ends at the visitor center. From this large parking lot, you can hike the Tower Trail and the Red Beds Trail. If you plan to climb Devils Tower, this is also where you will park. It connects the picnic area parking lot with the Red Beds Trail.

Neptune is the furthest planet from the Sun, so you might expect it to be the coldest planet. The truth is, there is no confirmed theory as to why Venus spins backwards relative to the other planets. Perhaps in the early days of the Solar System, Venus was hit by another object, sending it spinning in the opposite direction. Venus spins in the opposite direction to the rest of the planets in our Solar System. The Moon pulls back on it, effectively trying to slow it down and causing Earth’s rotation rate to gradually slow down over time as a result. The Moon exerts a pull on Earth, causing our planet to be slightly egg-shaped.
Every century, Earth slows by 1/500th of a second; 1,000 years from now, one day will be two hundredths of a second longer than today. This particular one of our facts relates to the common belief that there’s no gravity in space. These ‘rogue’ planets were thought to have been kicked out of their home systems. Demoted planet Pluto has yet to match this – it is not even close to completing one full, 248-year orbit since its discovery in 1930. Neptune takes a whopping 165 years to complete one full orbit around the Sun.
According to one version of the story, seven young girls were playing when a giant bear began to chase them. The girls prayed to the Great Spirit for rescue, and the ground beneath them rose toward the sky, carrying them out of the bear’s reach. The bear tried to climb the rising rock but slid down, leaving long, deep claw marks on the sides. The girls were lifted into the sky and became the seven stars of the Pleiades constellation. These stories give the tower a sacred significance, and many tribal members continue to hold ceremonies in the area today. Devils Tower is one of the most striking geologic features in North America.
Asteroids are the byproducts of formations in the solar system, more than 4 billion years ago.
Interestingly, Venus is not the closest planet to the Sun, Mercury is. Eventually the Moon will no longer cover the entire disc of the Sun from our perspective on Earth, and total solar eclipses won’t happen any more. You may have noticed in images of total solar eclipses how the circular Moon fits neatly and snugly over our circular Sun, just about covering it and no more.
How to Get to Devils Tower
The best outdoor activities at Devils Tower include hiking, rock climbing, biking, birding, taking scenic drives down the park road, and observing all the wildlife. While they may not have busy highways or crowded coffee shops, prairie dogs do have their own town in Devils Tower. This 40-acre grassland, conveniently located near the Tower and all main hiking trails in the park, is a haven for the cute critters and houses a whopping 600 of them.
Every year, ceremonies are conducted at Devils Tower by local tribes. As you walk around Devils Tower, you will see colorful cloths tied to the trees. These are prayer offerings and sometimes the cloths are placed in remembrance of another person.
The five dwarf planets are Ceres, Pluto, Haumea, Makemake, and Eris. This number could grow as more objects like these are discovered. Discovered by Italian astronomer Giuseppe Piazzi in 1801, the dwarf planet Ceres was the first, and largest, object to be considered an asteroid. It is located in the Asteroid Belt between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter and accounts for 33% of the entire belt’s mass.
Rapid City, South Dakota has a larger airport, making this is a great home base, not only for visiting Devils Tower, but for exploring this part of the country. From Rapid City, you can also visit Badlands and Wind Cave National Parks, Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park, and numerous historic towns. You can also visit Devils Tower on a road trip with Mount Rushmore, Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. At just over 2 miles, this intermediate-level trail loops through the hills and valleys of the oldest sedimentary rocks in the area, known as the Spearfish Formation. This red-tinted shale gives a colorful tinge to the area’s natural beauty and makes for a lovely afternoon hike. Jupiter’s Great Red Spot, which rotates once approximately every six days, is an anti-cyclonic storm 22° south of the planet’s equator.
Rising 1,267 feet above the surrounding plains and the Belle Fourche River, the formation seems to jut out of the earth like a giant stone pillar. Its almost perfectly vertical columns and flat summit make it instantly recognizable, and its size makes it a landmark visible for miles in every direction. Geologists believe the formation is the hardened core of an ancient volcano, formed roughly 40 to 50 million years ago. Over millions of years, erosion slowly stripped away the softer surrounding rock, leaving the harder volcanic columns exposed in their dramatic shape. Today, climbers from around the world visit Devils Tower to ascend its natural columns, while others simply come to marvel at its unique beauty. Whether you want to connect to other main Devils Tower trails or admire the prairie dogs, the South Side Trail is one to remember.
